THE ATHENAEUM SINGERS
PATRONS’ NEWSLETTER – February 2018
Much has happened since our last Newsletter and I have a great deal to report.
Firstly, I am very sad to say that Rose Davies, our Founder Member and Patron, died peacefully in her sleep earlier this month. Many of you will have known Rose and recall her wonderful work for the choir over many years. Her funeral will held be at The Minster on Friday 2nd March at 2:30 pm.
You will recall, following the resignation of our Music Director, Edward-Rhys Harry, we undertook to revert to a single Music Director who would also take us for weekly rehearsals. I am very happy to tell you that Cole Bendall was offered and has accepted the position of Music Director and he joins us in September 2018.
We held our AGM at the beginning of February and have had a couple of changes on the Committee, one of which is that sadly Maggi Ratcliffe has resigned as Patrons’ Secretary. For the time being, the role will be subsumed within the Treasurer’s responsibilities.
Rehearsals are under way for our performance of Mendelssohn’s wonderful oratorio Elijah, and several past members of the choir have returned to join us, together with some new faces. This promises to be an exciting and energetic performance, and to enhance the experience of learning this work, we are running a Workshop Day “Looking at Elijah afresh” on Saturday 28th April, 9.30 am start and open to non-members with a charge of £10 to include music.
Saturday 2nd June – 7 pm
We are delighted to report that we have secured Philip Guy Bromley as the baritone soloist for the role of Elijah. His interpretation of the role is quite spell binding and we are fortunate that he has agreed to participate. This will be our last concert under the baton of our Music Director and, apart from this proving to be a memorable evening, we also anticipate it being a celebration of all the years leading up to this point.
Sunday 3rd June - 12 noon
We shall be holding a 40th Anniversary Picnic at Codford Village Hall. We hope that as many members, past and present, conductors, patrons and friends are able to come and join us.
More details about these events will be forthcoming in due course.
With all good wishes
Jo Casey (Chairman)
